DAGGERHORN WISH HUNT: National SCI and GASCI again worked with Chapter member George Roark and his staff to host the 4th annual Golden Rule Hunt at his property in Ramer AL. This past year 6 vets and 3 medically fragile children attended from as far away as Texas. 6 deer were taken in 1 day of hunting. Many made lifelong friendships as we look forward to the 5th annual hunt in December. Anyone wanting to volunteer is welcome. You may contact James Lakeman @ Jlakeman@gasci.org. To learn more about Safari Wish visit their website.

FOOD PLOT SEED – FORMERLY CERTIFIED SEED AT HUGE DISCOUNTS - James Lakeman again offers a great opportunity to our members. You have read about this in the Georgia Outdoor News.  Last year the seed program supplied over 200,000lbs of seed for wildlife. This year we will be offering Soybeans, Corn, and Sorghum for $8,88/ bag. The seed is coated, so it can’t be bait. Additionally, we have made an arrangement for chicken litter for use as fertilizer. The Chapter has exclusive access to 2000 tons of great fertilizer. Contact James for more information or to buy seed (706) 454-1701 or jlakeman@gasci.org.  Ideal planting times are coming soon, so get your order to James.

SAFARI WISH GOLF TOURNAMENT The 2008 Golf Tournament was as tremendous success! Over 100 duffers enjoyed a great day of golf fun and guns!!  Special thanks to E Z GO for donating the fantastic golf cart. Very CoolThere were raffles, lots of prizes! Guns! Golf goodies and more! Once again John Morley and Tom Vitale worked long hours to put on this fantastic event. We are looking forward to 2009 to being the best year yet!  The date is September 11th, 2009. Same great location as always The Trophy Club of Atlanta http://www.golfatlanta.com/courses_trophyatlanta.htm Check out their web site!  This charity event pays out all proceeds to the selected charities Safari Wish Program and Pancreatic Cancer Research. John and Tom are evaluating adding another charity to this event.  Look for celebrities and more at the 2009 event!  Mark your calendars now for September 11th!  Hole sponsorships and other information can be obtained from John Morley at 770-569-1100 or Tom Vitale at 770-246-8363.

SAFARI WISH FISHING EVENT: We planning a gulf coast Safari Wish fishing event in the panhandle of FL. We will soon have dates. The local community appears to have much support for this event, which will focus on Kids and Vets.

CLUB SPONSORS – As club members, we ask you to support our sponsors.  They are a key reason we are successful.  Carl Black in Roswell has sponsored us for the 6th straight year!  Adventure Outdoors has been a strong sponsor for our raffles and auctions for years and we encourage you to check out their Smyrna store.  Jack Lesher at Chucks Firearms in Buckhead has been a supporter and member for many years. Besides having an unmatched selection of high end guns in the state, Chucks also has very competitive prices.  EZ-GO has again sponsored us with a Golf Cart, so if you need a quality RV these are the best guys with the best product.  We greatly appreciate these companies for their loyalty and continued generosity.

WILD GAME CHRISTMAS DINNER - DEC 10, 2009 – We’ve had great times the past couple years and are returning to the 173 Carlyle House in Norcross.  Last year we were very lucky to have Gemsbok and Desert Bighorn Sheep donated by Rex Baker and Moose from Mike Marinelli.  For directions the website is www.173carlylehouse.com.  We are currently asking for meat from members.  If you wish to donate meat, contact Newton at nbeasley@gasci.org or 770-987-4114.

ANNUAL SHOW 2009 – We had another successful fundraiser at the Century Center Marriott.  James Lakeman was the proud recipient of the Crockford Award presented by Steve Burch.  James has been as instrumental as any non-elected official in helping to pass the Constitutional Amendment protecting the rights of hunters, as well as being one of the pre-imminent activists in the country for the Safari Wish program.  The show was successful, though we had exhibitors cancel at the last minute, but were committed.  Plans are underway for 2010, and you will surely hear about this in the coming months.

MAGAZINE - We are soliciting member’s articles and photos throughout the year. Without submissions from our members we cannot have a magazine.  To submit articles for publishing, please send them to Marvin at marvinbrown69@bellsouth.net

MEMBERSHIP – The Board is planning a membership drive.  We will have an excellent prize, such as a Kimber.  Memberships are $35 for GASCI and you must belong to SCI to be a chapter member.  Cost to join both is $90, and a membership form is attached.  We encourage you to have a friend enroll and help us protect our right to hunt.

RANGER OF THE YEAR – This year’s recipient was Cpl. Scott Carroll from Albany.  Cpl. Carroll was instrumental in unraveling an interstate poaching ring with hunters from Florida.  We are honored to support and acknowledge the Rangers in the field.  These are our front line of defense against poachers and polluters.

AMERICAN WILDERNESS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL – in 2008 we sent Steve Scruggs to AWLS.  Steve has spoken very highly of the.  Last school year Steve had 50,000 students going through his course and learning about nature and renewable resource management.  Steve has been a supporter of our chapter for a long time and we thank him for his help.  We are considering other applicants for the AWLS program this year, so have resumes sent to rbaker@gasci.org.

DOVE SHOOT SATURDAY SEPT 5 - GASCI hosts a dove shoot & BBQ 1.3 hours north of Atlanta off I-75. With over 100 acres planted in millet, corn & grain sorghum, we expect another year of great shooting. The shoot is $98 pp for new members (includes a membership), chapter members only $50pp & children free! For non-shooters lunch is only $20 pp. All new members & sponsors will receive a free ticket for the raffle. Prizes include a gun, Cabela's Gift Certificates, etc. All proceeds go to support youth hunting programs in Georgia!

SPORTSMAN’S DAY AT THE CAPITOL – Newton Beasley, Keith Dillon and Rex Baker, Jr. attended the Sportsmen’s Day at the Capital.  It was a low key event with a short speech from the Governor promoting his fishing initiatives, and a few lawmakers walking and talking with various groups.  We displayed the SCI banner with pride and discussed the issues with people who enact the laws, and met with other hunting groups.

SPECIAL THANKS – It’s been a pleasure for me, Rex Baker, Jr., to serve for the past 11 years as a Board Member and Officer of GASCI.  Numerous people helped the Chapter, and I wish to thank everyone who volunteered, donated, exhibited and made GASCI important.  Members are the strength of any chapter and members like Bill Conn and my father, Rex Baker, Sr. gave donations that helped us raise funds for our projects.  I’m looking forward to helping the excellent Board Members and Officers that volunteered for the next year.  Newton Beasley started big initiatives, such as a membership drive, a Safari Wish Fishing trip and Safari Wish Fundraiser in conjunction with George Roark from Daggerhorn Plantation.  Newton is building a great team and I am sure we will see the results from their efforts shortly.  I ask you to keep your membership current and have a friend join us.  We host great events that could be better with more members attending.  No other chapter has been as active in Safari Wish, defending our rights at the local and national level as hunters, stopping poaching, among other programs.
